Guwahati, Dec 09: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the name of the recently born giraffe in the state zoo, announcing it as ‘Parijat.’ The naming process involved over 350 suggestions and the final choice was determined through a lucky draw.

The giraffe calf faced challenges in its early days, as its mother rejected it shortly after birth. Wildlife specialists from Mumbai, along with zoo authorities, played a crucial role in caring for and nurturing the infant giraffe.

The birth of the male giraffe calf was celebrated at the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in November.

Chief Minister Sarma shared the news on the ‘X’ platform, expressing delight at the new addition to the zoo.

Acknowledging the significance of the occasion, CM Sarma sought suggestions from the public for naming the newborn giraffe. The zoo already houses four giraffes, with a male named ‘Vijay’ introduced in 2019 and a female named ‘Vijaya’ added in 2022. The birth of ‘Parijat’ adds to the diversity of wildlife in the Assam State Zoo.
