Guwahati, Dec 06: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the controversy surrounding DMK MP DNV Senthilkumar’s “gaumutra states” remark, stating that it would have been more appropriate if the MP had used the term “gaumata” instead.

The controversy arose when Senthilkumar allegedly referred to the Hindi heartland states as “gaumutra states” following the BJP’s victory in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. CM Sarma emphasized India’s reverence for cows as mothers during a press conference in Guwahati.

He also mentioned the need to focus on upcoming elections, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to win the Lok Sabha elections with 350 to 400 seats.

After facing significant criticism for his remark, MP Senthilkumar issued an apology on the microblogging site X, acknowledging the inappropriate use of the term.

The comment drew widespread condemnation from various political parties, with Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti expressing shock and denouncing the derogatory remarks. Mufti emphasized that everyone in a democracy has the right to vote according to their wishes, and demeaning them for it is unwarranted and unacceptable.

CM Sarma’s response to the controversy focused on promoting a more respectful tone in political discourse and refraining from language that could further divide the country. He expressed a desire to avoid prolonged discussions on the matter, citing the need to concentrate on the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The incident highlights the sensitivity of language in political discussions, especially when it involves cultural or religious symbols. The apology from MP Senthilkumar and the reactions from various leaders underscore the importance of maintaining decorum in public discourse to foster a more inclusive and respectful political environment.
