Guwahati, April 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred controversy by questioning the religious stance of Gaurav Gogoi, a Congress MP, amidst his participation in Eid namaz while protesting on the day of the Ram Mandir consecration.

During a recent media interaction, Sarma expressed doubts about the religious sincerity of Gaurav Gogoi and Akhil Gogoi, highlighting their attendance at Eid celebrations juxtaposed with apparent indifference towards the consecration of the Ram Mandir.

Sarma specifically called out Gaurav Gogoi for his absence during the temple consecration, noting his presence at a protest alongside Rahul Gandhi in Nagaon.

Addressing the media, Sarma remarked, “Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi offered namaz in Sivsagar, and Gaurav knows how namaz is performed. But my question is, on the day of Eid, along with PM Modi, we extended our wishes. However, when the Ram Mandir consecration was happening, why did Gaurav Gogoi not exhibit the same religious fervour? While the consecration was ongoing, he chose to protest with Rahul Gandhi in Nagaon. Respect for Eid should be equal to that for Ram Mandir.”

Furthermore, Sarma emphasized that the issues faced by Assamese Muslims cannot be resolved through appeasement alone but require initiatives such as providing state government jobs, offering quality education, and combating child marriage.

Sarma criticized Gaurav Gogoi for allegedly prioritizing participation in a protest over attending the Ram Temple consecration, stating, “Gaurav Gogoi committed a grave error by neglecting the Ram Temple consecration to join Rahul Gandhi in Nagaon for a protest. Offering namaz on one hand and protesting on the day of the consecration on the other is contradictory.”

The Chief Minister also questioned Gaurav Gogoi’s response to the derogatory remarks made by APCC president Bhupen Borah about Lord Krishna, suggesting that his silence may reflect poorly on his commitment to his community.

Sarma’s remarks have ignited debate, with some members of the Hindu community reportedly questioning Gaurav Gogoi’s allegiance to his faith in light of his actions during Eid and the Ram Temple consecration.
