Arunachal Assam border

Guwahati, May 31: Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have taken one step forward towards the resolution of the long-pending border dispute between the two states.

On April 20, 2022, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu held a crucial meeting in which some decisions were taken.

Both Chief Ministers had agreed to an out-of-court settlement of the decades-old border dispute. The minutes of the meeting prepared by the Assam Government was approved by the government of the neighbouring state recently.

In the meeting, it was decided that both states would form 12 regional committees each to resolve the issue in a time-bound manner.

The regional committees will undertake joint surveys in the disputed areas to find tangible solutions to the long-pending issue while taking into consideration the peoples’ will and geographical perspective of both states.

This will be in line with the formula used for the resolution of the Assam-Meghalaya border issue.

The Assam Government has prepared the draft proposal for the formation of 12 regional committees from Assam’s side.

Sources in the Border Protection and Development Department said that the draft proposal has been sent to the Arunachal Pradesh government and once the government of the neighbouring states agrees to this draft proposal, the Assam Government will issue a notification for the formation of the 12 regional committees.

Assam shares a length of 804.10 km inter-state boundary with Arunachal Pradesh.

The regional committees of both states will carry out a joint survey in 123 villages along the border which are in dispute. These villages are in Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Charaideo districts.
