Weather Update, May 31: India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that heavy rain is likely in isolated places of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.

Tuesday (May 31)

  • IMD predicts: Heavy rain is likely in isolated places of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
  • Widespread rain and thunderstorms are possible over Lakshadweep.
  • Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Kerala, and Mahe.

Wednesday (June 1)

  • Heavy rain is likely in isolated places of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim.
  • Widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected over Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep.
  • Fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms have been forecast over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and South Interior Karnataka.

Accordingly, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed many of the East and Northeast states under a ‘yellow alert’, advising its residents to be updated on the weather situation.

The influence of an east-west trough from northwest Rajasthan to north Bangladesh and southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India is likely to result in the following weather occurrences:

  • Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall over Northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the next five days.
  • Isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated to scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal during the next five days.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall over Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya till Saturday, and over Arunachal Pradesh from June 1-4.
