Assam AGP

1. Ongoing turmoil within Assam Congress.
2. Reports indicate five Muslim MLAs may join AGP.
3. Allegiance switch expected post announcement of Lok Sabha candidates.

Guwahati, Feb 18: Amid ongoing turmoil within the Assam Congress, reports suggest that five Muslim MLAs from the party are poised to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

Speculation indicates that these MLAs might switch allegiance to the AGP following the announcement of Congress candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, potentially around February 20.

The rumored move stems from discontent within the party, particularly surrounding the candidature of Congress leader Rockybul Hussain for the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, which has sparked conflicts among local MLAs.

However, the veracity of these claims will only be confirmed once the Congress releases its official candidates list.

If the speculated defection materializes, it would deal another blow to the Congress, aligning the five MLAs with the BJP-led NDA coalition, of which the AGP is a part.

This development adds to a series of challenges the Assam Congress has faced recently, including open support for the BJP-led government by MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das, despite receiving show cause notices.

The rift within the party widened further when Golaghat district Congress president Dadu Taye was suspended after meeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, culminating in his expulsion from the Congress.

These incidents reflect a broader trend of Congress members defecting to the BJP, echoing similar occurrences at the national level, where leaders like former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath and his son Nakul are reportedly considering joining the BJP.

The Congress grapples with a crisis as several leaders switch allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections.
