Guwahati, Jan 08: The Assam government achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of Baayu, India’s pioneering app-based electric bike taxi service, inaugurated by the Honorable Minister of Transport, Parimal Suklabaidhya.

This innovative and sustainable mobility initiative, a collaboration between the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and Assam-based startup Bikozee Ecotech Pvt. Ltd., marks the debut of the country’s first decentralized bike taxi services, operating entirely on electric power.

Baayu, designed to integrate with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), signifies a leap forward in eco-friendly transportation solutions. The platform is set to initiate zero-emission bike taxi and delivery services, aligning with the Assam Aggregator Rules 2022.

The ambitious project aims to create 5,000 job opportunities for driver-partners within Assam, offering support in terms of electric vehicles, technology platforms, insurance, training, skill development, and operating licenses.

In addition to its job creation potential, Baayu holds the promise of substantial environmental benefits.

The initiative is projected to save an impressive 29,000 tons of carbon emissions annually and is poised to achieve an annual fuel cost savings of Rs. 73 crores.

Under the auspices of NITI Aayog’s Shoonya Zero Pollution Mobility campaign, Baayu’s “Clean Air Movement” aligns with national efforts to enhance air quality and public health.

The initiative, utilizing the decentralized technologies of the Beckn protocol, aims to develop digital public infrastructures to be deployed on the ONDC.

The Baayu project reflects the Government of Assam’s commitment to transformative, sustainable, and inclusive mobility solutions. It highlights the emphasis on environmental consciousness, economic growth, and entrepreneurship.

ONDC, initiated by DPIIT (Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India), plays a pivotal role in democratizing digital commerce.

It establishes an interoperable open network, facilitating digital transactions in goods and services across diverse product and service categories.

Baayu is positioned to contribute to this network by creating a connected multimodal transportation system, allowing seamless travel experiences across various modes of transportation.

With the success of ONDC in five cities and promising indicators of its potential impact on mobility and transport sectors, the government envisions replicating this successful mobility model in Guwahati and other cities across the country.

The introduction of Baayu, therefore, not only symbolizes a major advancement in Assam’s transportation landscape but also aligns with broader national initiatives to promote sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced mobility solutions.
