Guwahati, Nov 29: The Assam education department has introduced a special optional 12-day leave for teachers to engage in Vipassana meditation, an ancient mindfulness technique.

The announcement comes as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing teacher capacity building. Simultaneously, the introduction of Vedic maths in Assam’s school education further underscores the commitment to holistic educational development.

The Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission, in compliance with a government order, has directed district commissioners and principal secretaries of autonomous councils to ensure the dissemination of this information among teachers.

The provision of special leave is an effort to encourage educators to explore mindfulness practices, potentially benefiting their overall well-being and teaching effectiveness.

Teachers who are interested in availing of this unique opportunity have already started attending training sessions at a designated center in Chandrapur. This marks a proactive step toward fostering a culture of well-being and personal development among the teaching community.

However, the move has not been without its share of controversy. While there is no clear consensus from teachers’ organizations on this initiative, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has expressed opposition. Their stance revolves around the perception that granting special leave for meditation training might disrupt the regular class schedule.

As education undergoes continuous evolution, incorporating practices like Vipassana meditation and Vedic maths demonstrates a commitment to a comprehensive and progressive learning environment.

The initiative reflects an acknowledgement of the multifaceted roles teachers play, not only as educators but also as individuals whose well-being can significantly impact the quality of education they provide.

The ensuing discussions and debates around this initiative underscore the importance of balancing innovative approaches with the practicalities of maintaining a smooth academic calendar.
