Kohima, April 29: Businesses establishments in Nagaland resumed operations on Monday following a three-day shutdown organized by an industry body protesting against “unabated extortion” by underground groups, officials confirmed.

Shops and other commercial entities reopened for varying durations, with industry bodies supporting the shutdown announcing different relaxation timings across the northeastern state on Monday.

The shutdown initially began in Dimapur, the state’s commercial hub, on Friday, with other districts subsequently joining the protest following the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industries’ (CNCCI) call.

CNCCI had urged the state government to take immediate action to curb the “unabated extortions, intimidations, and summons” by underground groups.

While CNCCI announced a relaxation period from 12 noon to 6 pm on Monday, other business bodies in different districts varied in their relaxation timings, according to officials.

In some districts, the relaxation period was extended from 6 am to 6 pm, contributing to traffic congestion in several areas of the state as residents rushed to procure essential goods.

Additionally, Nagaland Police introduced an app, encouraging the business community and the public to report instances of extortion and drug trafficking, officials noted.
