Guwahati, Feb 01: The Assam government is gearing up to introduce the Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill, 2024, in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha budget session, according to State Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah.

Highlighting the significance of the Assam Tourism Bill 2024, Baruah stated, “We could not regulate tourism in the state because we did not have an act. In the upcoming Vidhan Sabha budget session, this act will be implemented…”

This legislative initiative is poised to rejuvenate and boost the tourism industry in the state, focusing on economic development through the enhancement of tourism infrastructure and the promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism practices.

The bill aims to preserve Assam’s cultural and natural heritage while elevating the overall tourist experience through improved services, infrastructure, and attractions.

Additionally, it seeks to mitigate adverse effects on the environment, local culture, and communities, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the tourism sector.

In tandem with the proposed bill, the Assam government has been actively engaged in various initiatives to promote tourism.

The introduction of the Assam Tourism Bill 2024 is a strategic move to harness the state’s rich tourism potential, encompassing exotic wildlife, scenic landscapes, vibrant festivals, historical monuments, lush tea gardens, and the mighty Brahmaputra River.

The anticipated economic impact is substantial, given that tourism already contributes 6.23% to the national GDP and attracts millions of visitors annually.

On January 31, 2024, the Assam cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the bill, marking a historic stride toward cultural preservation and social reform.

With this legislative framework, Assam is poised to become an even more coveted destination, offering a diverse array of activities ranging from trekking in tea gardens to wildlife tourism in renowned national parks like Kaziranga and Manas.
