Aizawl, Feb 01: Mizoram Police and Champhai Forest Department conducted a successful operation leading to the rescue of 49 exotic animals and birds in Champhai, suspected to have been smuggled from the India-Myanmar border.

The operation, which resulted in the seizure of exotic animals and birds valued at Rs 68.40 lakh, was carried out by a combined team of Assam Rifles and the Forest Department based on specific information.

The confiscated animals were concealed in iron cages and plastic baskets, and transported from the India-Myanmar border on the Aizawl side.

The entire consignment and the arrested individuals—Vachonia from Tuipang Siaha district, Vanlalthlana, and Zemabawk Aizawl—have been handed over to the Forest Department, Champhai, for further legal proceedings.

The rescued animals encompass a variety of species, including Solomon Cockatoo (10), Posque’s Parrot (2), Turtle (9), Snake (10), Lizard (16), and Marmoset Monkey (2).

This joint operation aims to curb illegal wildlife trafficking and protect the diverse fauna in the region, emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation and law enforcement.
