AIUDF

1. Reports indicate that two AIUDF MLAs may soon switch allegiance to the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in Assam.
2. The defection of these MLAs is expected to happen before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, following a pattern of leaders from different parties joining the ruling NDA alliance.
3. This potential move could impact both the AIUDF and Congress while bolstering the AGP’s position ahead of the elections.

Guwahati, Feb 20: In Assam’s political landscape, reports suggest that two MLAs from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are poised to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The defection of these three AIUDF MLAs is anticipated to occur in the run-up to the elections, mirroring a trend of leaders from various parties, including the Congress, transitioning to the ruling NDA alliance.

If this defection materializes, it could potentially dent the AIUDF’s standing under the leadership of Badruddin Ajmal, while also posing a challenge for the Congress as another significant opposition party faces internal rifts.

For the AGP, such a move would provide a considerable boost ahead of the elections, especially following reports of Muslim MLAs from the Congress also considering joining their ranks.

This would represent a significant setback for both the Congress and the AIUDF, potentially shifting minority votes towards the BJP-led government in Assam.

Recent events have showcased a shifting landscape, with the AGP witnessing an influx of around 500 youths from the All Assam Students Union (AASU), a blow to the latter organization.

This follows former AASU leaders’ migration to the BJP, raising questions about the internal dynamics of the student body and its political affiliations.

Former AASU president Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s formation of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), now aligned with the Congress-led INDIA alliance, underscores the evolving political landscape in the state.

The AGP, once an offshoot of the AASU, established its student wing, the Asom Chhatra Parishad, in 2019, signaling a divergence between the two entities.
