Lucknow, Feb 20: Swami Prasad Maurya, a prominent figure in the Samajwadi Party, announced his resignation from both the party membership and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on Tuesday.

This move comes a week after he stepped down from his position as the party’s national general secretary.

Maurya made his resignation public by sharing his resignation letters addressed to the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief, Akhilesh Yadav, in a statement to X.

In his letter to the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, Maurya explained his decision, stating, “I have been elected as a member of the Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh from the Assembly, Uttar Pradesh constituency as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party. Additionally, in his letter addressed to Akhilesh Yadav, Maurya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work under his leadership.

However, he highlighted his disappointment with the lack of initiative taken by the party leadership to address his concerns raised during talks held on February 12, 2024, and in a subsequent letter sent on February 13, 2024. Consequently, Maurya decided to resign from the primary membership of the Samajwadi Party.

Maurya’s decision to resign from his role as the party’s national general secretary on February 13 stemmed from perceived discrimination within the party leadership.

He voiced dissatisfaction with the lack of support he received regarding his controversial statements on the Ramcharitmanas and the consecration ceremony of the Ayodhya temple.

Overall, Maurya’s resignation marks a significant development within the Samajwadi Party, highlighting internal tensions and disagreements within its leadership.
