Guwahati, Jan 09: The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections in Assam unfolded smoothly, recording a robust voter turnout of over 74 percent.

The electoral process, marked by tranquility, saw citizens participating without any untoward incidents reported, signifying a commendable display of democratic engagement.

Tranquil Polling Day

Commencing at 8 am, the polling for the 22 seats of the NCHAC concluded with a significant turnout from the 1,15,615 eligible voters. Officials overseeing the election process affirmed its peaceful conduct, highlighting the absence of any disruptions or irregularities throughout the day.

Robust Participation and Expected Turnout Surge

As the preliminary reports indicate a turnout surpassing 74 percent, officials anticipate a further rise in the figures. The compilation of data from remote polling stations, which traditionally takes additional time, is expected to be finalized by Tuesday afternoon, providing a comprehensive and accurate voter turnout figure.

Counting Schedule and Uncontested Victories

The culmination of the election process led to the counting of votes scheduled for January 12. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victories in six constituencies uncontested out of the total 28 in the NCHAC, situated across the Dima Hasao district.

Strategically Categorized Polling Stations

A total of 231 polling stations facilitated the voting process, strategically categorized based on sensitivity levels. Among these, 15 were identified as very sensitive, 36 as sensitive, and 21 as comparatively safe. Additionally, 16 polling stations were exclusively designated for women, promoting inclusivity and accessibility.

Political Landscape and Contesting Parties

The political landscape of the NCHAC saw active participation from various political entities. While the BJP aimed to uphold its dominance in the council, opposition parties, including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, presented candidates to contest the elections. The results of the NCHAC elections hold significance for the region’s political dynamics and governance.
