Malé, Jan 09: The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has expressed strong condemnation for derogatory comments made by certain deputy ministers on social media platforms against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India.

This reaction comes in the aftermath of PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. In an official statement, MATI emphasized India’s historical role as a “first responder” to crises in the Maldives and stressed the vital contribution of India to the Maldivian tourism sector.

India’s Historical Support and Tourism Contribution

MATI acknowledged India’s consistent and significant role in supporting the Maldives during various crises, highlighting the close relationship maintained by the governments and people of both nations.

India’s contribution to the Maldivian tourism industry has been substantial, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. India has been a key market for the Maldives, aiding in its recovery efforts after reopening borders.

Sincere Wish for Enduring Relations

The tourism industry expressed its sincere wish for an enduring relationship between the two nations and committed to refraining from actions or speech that could negatively impact their strong ties. The statement aimed at fostering positive diplomatic relations emphasized the importance of the enduring bond between India and the Maldives.

Impact on Travel Platforms and Diplomatic Fallout

The diplomatic row has had repercussions in the travel industry. EaseMyTrip, a prominent online travel platform in India, announced the suspension of flight bookings to the Maldives in response to the derogatory comments.

Economic Impact and Call for Boycott

With the Maldives heavily dependent on tourism, especially from Indian visitors, the diplomatic spat poses a threat to a crucial sector of its economy. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) called upon domestic traders and exporters to refrain from conducting business dealings with the Maldives.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal stated that the business community finds the derogatory comments unacceptable, and the call for a boycott aims to express solidarity and register disapproval against such disrespectful behavior.

Ministerial Suspensions in the Maldives

In response to the controversy, the Maldivian government took action by suspending Deputy Ministers Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid from the youth ministry.

The foreign ministry clarified that the derogatory remarks on social media platforms were personal views and did not represent the government’s official position.

The diplomatic fallout underscores the sensitivity of international relations and the potential economic consequences for the Maldives, emphasizing the interconnectedness of diplomatic affairs and the tourism industry in the strategically important archipelago.
