Guwahati, Feb 12: Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) enters its final phase, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stating that the completion of the process now lies in the hands of the central government.

Addressing the House in response to MLA Kamalakhya Purkayastha’s query, Sarma affirmed that the state government has concluded its initial responsibilities in the first phase of the NRC.

Sarma assured that those identified in the final NRC list, out of the 27 lakh citizens under review, will regain their Aadhaar cards.

Among these citizens, 17 lakh have been deemed eligible for Aadhaar card restoration.

Efforts are underway to ensure the seamless completion of the entire NRC process without discrepancies, with a commitment to releasing the final list at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Assam is poised for the presentation of the state budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, scheduled for February 12.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog is gearing up to table the budget in the State Legislative Assembly, marking her fourth consecutive presentation.

Neog has emphasized the importance of realism in this budget, reflecting on the previous year’s expenditure of approximately Rs 3.21 lakh crore.

In other developments, the Assam cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill, 2024. The bill, aimed at curbing fraudulent healing practices in the state, seeks to provide relief to victims of such practices.

The approval of this bill underscores the government’s commitment to addressing societal issues and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced the cabinet’s decision following a meeting held at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Guwahati, on Saturday.
