Kolkata, Feb 29: Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose expressed optimism and described the arrest of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan as a “light at the end of the tunnel”, signaling a positive turn of events for the state.
Shahjahan, embroiled in allegations of sexual violence and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali village, North 24 Paraganas district, was apprehended from the Bamanpukur area at Minakhan.
This arrest followed the governor’s 72-hour ultimatum to the state government, indicating a swift response to the escalating tensions.
Addressing reporters, Bose emphasized the significance of Shahjahan’s arrest in restoring lawfulness to Bengal, portraying it as a triumph for democracy. He expressed satisfaction at the unfolding developments, implying a hopeful outlook for the state’s future.
Shahjahan was promptly taken to the Basirhat court for further legal proceedings, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation.
According to Supratim Sarkar, ADG South Bengal, Shahjahan’s arrest is linked to the attack on ED officials on January 5, where he was identified as a primary suspect.
Additionally, investigations into several other cases stemming from the Sandeshkhali unrest are underway.

Poonawalla accused the TMC of shielding Shahjahan, highlighting instances where party leaders purportedly defended him.
The BJP spokesperson underscored the role of public outcry and legal intervention in compelling the TMC government to take action, implying that Shahjahan’s arrest was a result of external pressure rather than genuine intent.
He criticized the TMC’s past stance on the matter, alleging complicity in protecting Shahjahan from accountability.
