Guwahati, Nov 22: Congress leader Bhupen Borah has raised a pertinent question directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), querying whether the recent tax hike imposed by the BJP-led government would translate into an enhanced vote share in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

This inquiry comes in response to the tax policies introduced by the State Government, leaving citizens astounded by the unexpected financial burden.

Addressing the media, Bhupen Borah challenged the BJP’s assumptions, questioning the correlation between escalating taxes and an increase in electoral support. He emphasized the potential impact of rising commodity prices and unemployment on the BJP’s vote share, urging the party to consider these factors seriously.

Borah’s critique follows a statement by Assam cabinet minister Pijush Hazarkia, who declared that if the Congress secures victories in the Diphu and Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituencies, he would abstain from participating in future elections.

The State Government’s recent tax policy adjustments have left citizens grappling with additional financial burdens for various activities. The revised fees include Rs 300 for permission to organize cultural processions, events, and ceremonies, Rs 2,000 for political rallies and meetings, and Rs 2,000 for sporting events.

Furthermore, the charges extend to Rs 500 for street plays and awareness rallies, Rs 5,000 for trade fairs and food fairs, and a substantial Rs 50,000 in Guwahati for commercial construction permission, with a slightly reduced fee of Rs 25,000 in other parts of the state.

Moreover, the revised tax policy imposes a fee of Rs 10,000 for obtaining permission to open petrol pumps and gas agencies, Rs 300 for private employment verification, and an additional Rs 300 for verification of rented accommodations and PGs.

Construction workers also face a verification fee of Rs 300. These adjustments mark a departure from the previous tax structure, indicating a significant financial shift for citizens, prompting Bhupen Borah to question the BJP’s political strategy in light of these economic changes.
