Mizoram landslide

1. A tragic landslide at Kawnpui railway construction site claimed the lives of two non-tribal workers.
2. The victims were identified as Dipak Datta (27) and Durga Prasad Passi (53) from Machak, VTC Mosaka, Nagoan District, Assam.
3. The workers were killed on the spot as they became trapped under the debris during the landslide.


Aizawl, Nov 22: Two non-tribal workers were killed by a massive landslide at the site of the proposed Railway Station being constructed at Kawnpui in Mizoram-Assam border Kolasib district on Wednesday, Police said.

The two workers Dipak Datta (27) s/o Sankar Datta and Durga Prasad Passi (53) s/o Baydyanath Passi, both residents of Machak, VTC Mosaka, Nagoan District, Assam died on the spot when they were trapped under the debris of the landslide.

Post-mortem examinations on the dead bodies were performed at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Kawnpui town from where they were sent to their homes.

The two workers were employees of RL Construction Pvt. Ltd., one of the construction companies, working under the Northeast Frontier Railways which is constructing over 51-kilometre long Assam Bairabi rail station to Sairang rail station near Aizawl.

Eyewitnesses said that an excavator was employed to clear the soil for construction of the proposed Kawnpui rail station while the two deceased persons were levelling the soil manually. The sudden landslide from above killed them instantly.
