Kolkata, Feb 14: Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar sustained injuries as clashes erupted between party workers and police personnel when they were barred from entering Sandeshkhali, where women have been protesting against alleged atrocities by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.

Earlier, Bengal police prevented Sukanta Majumdar from leaving a guest house in Taki, North 24 Parganas district, deploying a large force to enforce section 144, prohibiting assembly.

Despite the prohibitory orders, BJP leaders, including Majumdar, persisted in their march towards Sandeshkhali, resulting in a confrontation with the police.

The clash occurred following the BJP’s announcement of a gherao of the Basirhat Superintendent of Police’s office in protest against the Sandeshkhali situation.

Attempts to breach police barricades led to a scuffle, prompting police to resort to lathicharge to disperse the protesters.

Expressing concern over the situation, Majumdar criticized the lawlessness in Bengal, alleging the state government’s attempts to conceal the truth.

In response, the Trinamool Congress accused the BJP of instigating unrest in the state.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured that steps were being taken to address the issue, stating that the state women’s commission had been sent to Sandeshkhali and multiple arrests had been made.

The women protesters allege that Shajahan Sheikh and his associates forcibly seized their land and harassed women in the area.

Sheikh has been missing since January after an Enforcement Directorate team conducting searches at his house in connection with a ration scam was attacked by a mob.
