Guwahati, Feb 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made startling revelations about Rahul Gandhi’s approach during his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, alleging that the Congress leader threatened MLAs with expulsion if they failed to disrupt Assembly proceedings.

Sarma’s disclosure has ignited a political firestorm, drawing attention to Gandhi’s purported tactics in Assam.

Sarma’s statements, made during a media interaction, shed light on a meeting where a legislator reportedly expressed concern over Congress MLAs’ reluctance to criticize the state government.

According to Sarma, Gandhi then convened with Assam Congress MLAs on his yatra bus, warning them that failure to impede the functioning of the Assam Assembly or criticize the Chief Minister would result in expulsion from the party for at least 15 years.

The Assam Chief Minister has also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, suggesting that the initiative, aimed at unifying India, is instead exacerbating divisions within the Congress party.

This critique comes amid a wave of defections from the Assam Congress, with MLAs like Kamalaksh De Purkayastha and Basant Das aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public welfare policies.

Four out of 25 Assam Congress MLAs have already joined the BJP’s Vikas Yatra, signaling a significant shift in political allegiances.

In a separate development, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha resigned from the post of Working President, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, expressing his intention to continue serving as a primary member of the Congress party.

This resignation further underscores the internal turmoil within the Assam Congress, as leaders grapple with ideological differences and the changing political landscape.
