Kolkata, Feb 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing criticism against the West Bengal government on Wednesday regarding the alleged sexual assault incidents in Sandeshkhali.

During a press conference, BJP‘s Gaurav Bhatia denounced the situation, claiming that West Bengal has transformed into a state governed by individuals involved in sexual violence.

Gaurav Bhatia emphasized, “Bengal has turned into a state run by a government of rapists, by rapists, for rapists.” He referenced the Kolkata High Court’s recent acknowledgement of the reported sexual assaults on women in Sandeshkhali, particularly highlighted by a tribal community newspaper.

Directing questions towards Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bhatia challenged her stance, stating, “Why do you hate Hindus, tribals, and backward people? Your goons are exploiting people, and you are silent.”

The BJP’s outcry followed allegations from women in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, accusing Trinamool Congress’ local leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of forcefully capturing land and subjecting them to sexual assault. The victims demanded Sheikh’s immediate arrest.

Expressing grave concern over the Sandeshkhali incidents, the Calcutta High Court spontaneously initiated an inquiry into the allegations of sexual assault.

In response to protests by women, Governor CV Ananda Bose assured support to the victims, who symbolically tied rakhi on his wrist, promising assistance in their quest for justice.

Earlier in the week, the BJP launched a blistering attack on Mamata Banerjee, alleging her complicity in what they described as the “genocide of Hindus” and accused her party workers of perpetrating sexual violence against women.

Union Minister Smriti Irani delivered a forceful condemnation of the situation during a press briefing.

Shajahan Sheikh, the accused local leader, has been evading authorities since last month after an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team was attacked by a mob of his supporters during a raid on his house in connection with an alleged ration scam.
