Jaipur, Feb 14: Sonia Gandhi submitted her nomination papers for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan on Wednesday, marking a significant move in her political career.

Accompanied by her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sonia Gandhi arrived at the Jaipur airport earlier in the day, where they were welcomed by senior leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, among others.

The Congress party unveiled its list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, nominating Sonia Gandhi from Rajasthan. Additionally, Akhilesh Prasad Singh was nominated from Bihar, Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Himachal Pradesh, and Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra.

Securing one Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan is guaranteed for the Congress, ensuring Sonia Gandhi’s entry into the Upper House after serving five terms as a Lok Sabha MP.

Sonia Gandhi, who previously represented Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha, has decided not to contest the upcoming general elections. Her political journey began in 1999 when she was elected as an MP after assuming the role of Congress president.

A total of 56 members of the Rajya Sabha from 15 states are set to retire in April, with elections for these seats scheduled for February 27. The deadline for filing nominations is February 15.
