New Delhi, Jan 18: As the Congress strategically plans to contest fewer than 300 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to accommodate INDIA bloc allies, the BJP is gearing up for an ambitious campaign, aiming to contest well over 450 seats in a bid to surpass its impressive 303-seat win from 2019.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP contested 436 seats, securing a remarkable victory with 303 seats and 22.9 crore votes, holding a 37.7% vote share. In contrast, the Congress contested 421 seats in 2019, garnering around 11.94 crore votes.

However, this time, the Congress plans to focus on approximately 290 seats, while sources suggest the BJP could significantly increase its contesting seats.

The absence of alliances with parties like JDU in Bihar, Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, or the Akali Dal in Punjab opens the door for the BJP to contest more seats in these states and increase its overall participation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In 2019, the BJP contested only 17 of the 40 seats in Bihar, 25 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra, and five of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu.

This time, the party aims to secure a lion’s share of seats in these states, capitalizing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and significant achievements, such as the abrogation of Article 370 in J&K, the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, and its development initiatives.

With another tour planned for South India later this week, Prime Minister Modi aims to spend a substantial amount of time in the region ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing the party’s concerted efforts to make significant inroads in South India.
