Aizawl, Jan 18: In the aftermath of a recent clash with the people’s army near the Karma River along the border, a significant development has unfolded as 278 soldiers from the Myanmar Army sought refuge in Mizoram.

The incident transpired in the Bandukba area of Lawngtlai District, Mizoram, where Myanmar army personnel, fully armed and equipped, entered Indian territory. Following their arrival, they were taken to the Assam Rifles camp, where they spent the night.

This episode follows a similar occurrence on January 2 when 151 Myanmarese soldiers, who had fled during armed clashes with an ethnic insurgent group in Myanmar, sought refuge in Mizoram.

However, in that instance, they were subsequently airlifted by the Myanmar Air Force from Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, and taken back to their home country.

The origin of this series of events can be traced back to December 29 when the soldiers crossed the Indian border and entered southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.

They were escaping from their camps near the international borders, which had been overrun by fighters belonging to the Arakan Army, an insurgent group operating in Myanmar.

While the initial group of soldiers faced repatriation, the recent influx of 278 soldiers seeking refuge in Mizoram has added complexity to the ongoing situation.

The clashes and subsequent movements across the border highlight the challenges posed by the conflict and unrest in Myanmar, affecting both its internal dynamics and the neighboring regions.
