Aizawl, Sept 26: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga unveiled the foundation stone of the Mizoram State Super Specialty Cancer & Research Centre. This state-of-the-art facility, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with a budget of Rs. 700 crores, is set to be constructed at the Mizoram State Cancer Institute Complex in Zemabawk, Aizawl.

Zoramthanga expressed his delight at this momentous occasion, marking a major step forward in Mizoram’s healthcare capabilities. He extended his heartfelt gratitude to the government of Japan and JICA for their generous contribution to the state’s healthcare initiatives.

Recognizing the significant burden of cancer and related diseases in Mizoram, the Chief Minister believes that this super speciality and research center will play a crucial role in combating these life-threatening challenges.

During the unveiling ceremony, Chief Minister Zoramthanga also seized the opportunity to appeal to the general public to adopt healthy daily lifestyles, emphasizing the importance of avoiding tobacco and related products that are known to be causative factors for cancer and other terminal illnesses. He reiterated the age-old adage that “prevention is always better than cure,” encouraging individuals to prioritize their health through preventative measures.

The event witnessed speeches from prominent figures, including Health Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana, Hajime Taniguchi (Senior Representative, JICA India Office), and Dr. Jeremy L. Pautu (Project Coordinator cum Director, Mizoram State Cancer Institute). Each speaker highlighted the significance of establishing this new center and its potential to transform cancer care and research in Mizoram.

The Mizoram State Super Specialty Cancer & Research Centre is a substantial project with a total cost of Rs. 700 crores. JICA will fund 80 percent of the project, while the remaining 20 percent will be contributed by the government of Mizoram.

This state-of-the-art facility will feature a 200-bed hospital, equipped with the latest machinery and world-class specialists and researchers dedicated to cancer and related diseases. The project is slated for completion by 2028, promising to enhance healthcare services and research capabilities in Mizoram.
