National Sports Day

Itanagar, Aug 29: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday remembered hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand, on the occasion of National Sports Day.

CM Pema appreciates the sporting abilities of the youth. He also gave emphasis on the medals fetched by the youth since 2016 in various recognized international, national and zonal games.

Arunachal CM paid tribute to the hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand, on Twitter and wrote “I join the nation in paying my humble tribute to #MajorDhyanChand, one of the greatest field hockey players in history, on his jayanti, which we also observe as #NationalSportsDay. ‘The Wizard’ of hockey was incredible & will inspire aspiring sportspersons for ages to come.”

“We’re proud of our youth and their sporting abilities. Since 2016, they’ve bagged 314 Gold, 212 Silver, and 277 Bronze🏅in various recognized international, national and zonal games. We’re providing them with better infra facilities. National Centre of Excellence at Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy, 54 Small Khelo India Centres sanctioned so far! Cash incentives are given to meritorious sportspersons for bringing laurels to the state by winning medals. Rs 383 lakh has been disbursed from 2015-16 to 2021-22,” CM Pema Khandu further wrote.

India celebrates National Sports Day on 29th August to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand. The day is also dedicated to the nation’s sports heroes and champions, honoring their contributions and dedication to bringing laurels to the country.

With the aim to raise awareness about the values of sports: discipline, perseverance, sportsman spirit, and teamwork, and to encourage the public at large to take up sports and make it an integral part of their lives while emphasizing the importance of being fit and healthy. The hockey legend won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932, and 1936.

The National Sports Day aims to create awareness about the importance of sports and the benefits of being physically active in life. Various events with the theme of promoting sports among people are organized around the country.

On this day, outstanding sportspersons of the country are honored with recognitions like Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and Dronacharya Award. The awards are presented by the President of India at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
