Imphal, Feb 08: Tension has escalated in peripheral areas of Imphal East following an incident of spilling peculiar substances into the Iril River, sparking outrage and condemnation from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).

COCOMI, a prominent socio-cultural organization in Manipur, has called for immediate action against those responsible for the toxic oil spill in the river, which has severely affected downstream communities.

The incident, described as a brutal assault on villagers in Itham Moirangpurel Tumukhong, has also resulted in the contamination of the Thoubal river water.

The spill occurred during an attack by a suspected armed group on individuals working at a sand quarry on February 7.

Expressing shock and dismay over the incident, COCOMI labeled it as a severe environmental catastrophe, particularly impacting the Leimakhong areas. In a press note, COCOMI strongly condemned the inhumane actions and demanded swift and stringent action against the perpetrators.

COCOMI emphasized the urgent need for authorities to apprehend both the culprits responsible for the spill and the groups involved in the attack.

The organization described the incident as part of a concerning pattern of genocidal attempts, stressing the necessity for a robust and immediate response to address the situation.
