Guwahati, Jan 21: The Congress party has accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of creating obstacles for Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ claiming that permission to pass through Guwahati has been denied. Sarma had advised the Congress to avoid entering Guwahati with the Yatra and warned of legal actions.

Addressing a press conference in Lakhimpur district, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that the police were delaying the permission by asking irrelevant questions. He urged the Assam Government to permit the Yatra to follow the same route used by BJP President JP Nadda during his recent visit to Guwahati.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Arunachal Pradesh after spending three days in Assam. It is scheduled to resume its Assam leg on Sunday and continue through the state until January 25.

The Congress alleged that vehicles participating in the Yatra in Assam were attacked, and banners were torn in North Lakhimpur. The party claimed that no other BJP-ruled states in the country had created problems like the Assam government.

On January 18, an FIR was reportedly lodged in Jorhat district against the Yatra and its chief organizer. Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia confirmed that they had applied for permission on January 12 and 19, discussing the routes with Assam’s top police officials.

Jairam Ramesh compared this situation to last year when Gandhi organized a Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, traveling through four BJP-ruled states without facing such issues. He announced that the Yatra would enter Guwahati on January 23, where Rahul Gandhi would meet youths and interact with local journalists.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on January 18, stated that there are government medical colleges and private hospitals in Guwahati, emphasizing that the state government would not allow anyone to create problems for patients.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the Assam government of threatening the common people and not allowing them to participate in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

He highlighted instances where women were blocked for hours, petrol pumps refused fuel, and local businessmen were warned not to join the Yatra.

A video shared by the Congress on social media showed youths vandalizing posters of the Yatra. The party plans to file a police complaint against the miscreants associated with the BJP.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the alleged act, stating that the BJP government in Assam would not intimidate the Congress party. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Arunachal Pradesh, where he criticized the BJP for unemployment, price rise, and GST pressure in the state.
