reschedule Manipur Polls

Imphal, Jan 19: After Punjab, political parties of Manipur are now demanding to reschedule state polls. The state will vote on February 27 and March 3.

Manipur has 60 seats and 38 seats will go to the polls in the first phase.

The Congress has already submitted a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), stating that February 27 is Sunday and voting on that day of the week goes against the religious sentiment of the Christian community. Hence requested to reschedule Manipur Polls.

Tribal groups and tribal students’ unions also have the same opinion.

AICC national vice-chairperson and Spokesperson, said, “Sunday is scary day as Christians have to go to their church. We have written to the EC to reconsider this date. Any day apart from Sunday is fine. They have changed the date in Punjab. Hope they will change ours too.”

The tribals who predominantly cover a major portion of Manipur are mostly Christians.

Before Congress, last Monday, the Christian community also approached the EC to reschedule dates.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the other hand also requested the ECI to change the date.
