Chandigarh, Dec 03: The celebration of Assam Diwas at Punjab Governor’s House on December 2 took an unexpected turn as an inappropriate Bihu dance performance stirred controversy and drew criticism from attendees. This incident echoes a similar controversy on September 11, 2023, when a ‘distorted’ Bihu dance performance marked the arrival of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Delhi.

Assam Diwas, also known as Asom Divas, holds historical significance as it marks the establishment of the state of Assam on December 2, 1963. This day signifies the separation of Nagaland and Meghalaya from Assam under the States Reorganization Act of 1956, shaping present-day Assam.

The untoward Bihu dance presentation at the Punjab Governor’s House has sparked concern, particularly considering the cultural importance of the dance. Bihu, a traditional Assamese dance, holds a pivotal role in Assam’s cultural heritage. The performance was anticipated to symbolize celebration, unity, and reflection on the rich history and diverse culture of Assam.

The incident raises questions about the appropriateness and cultural sensitivity of such performances during significant events that are meant to highlight the cultural heritage and unity of a region. It underscores the need for organizers to ensure that cultural presentations are respectful, accurate, and aligned with the spirit of the occasion, avoiding any unintended controversies or misunderstandings.
