Kolkata, Feb 26: The Calcutta High Court has strongly criticized the West Bengal authorities for their alleged inaction in the Sandeshkhali case, urging the immediate arrest of Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan.

The court rebuked the authorities for the delay in addressing the allegations of sexual assault and land grab, which were reported four years ago. It emphasized the need for swift action, stating that the incidents have resulted in 42 chargesheets over the years.

Dispelling any notion of an interim stay order preventing Shahjahan’s arrest, the court asserted that he should be apprehended without delay.

Furthermore, the court directed officials to issue public notices in newspapers, informing the public about the legal actions initiated against Sheikh Shahjahan.

Regarding the influx of politicians to the area, despite restrictions under Section 144, the court questioned the necessity of such visits amidst the agitated atmosphere.
It emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order in the region.

The ongoing protests in Sandeshkhali were sparked by allegations of sexual assault and land grab against Trinamool leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters.

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes received numerous complaints regarding these allegations, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

Sheikh Shahjahan has remained elusive since the violent attack on Enforcement Directorate officials on January 5, further complicating the situation.

The region has witnessed escalating violence, with incidents of arson and vandalism.

In a recent development, a group of women protesters ransacked the house of Trinamool Congress leader Sankar Sardar, underscoring the volatile nature of the situation.
