Sikkim snowfall

Gangtok, Jan 22: Several places in the Darjeeling and the upper reaches of Sikkim received snowfall in the past 24 hours. It also teemed at various places in north Bengal, especially in the sub-Himalayan region, during this same period.

The snowfall and the rain have brought down the mercury in these regions. In the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature in Darjeeling was 2.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Gangtok at 4.3 degrees Celsius and Kalimpong at 8 degrees Celsius.

There was a chill feeling in the adjoining plains as well.

According to sources at the Gangtok centre of the India Meteorological Department said there might be fresh rain and snowfall in Sikkim and the neighboring areas during the next week because of western disturbances approaching the Himalayan state and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal.

According to Indian Meteorological Department sources, there is also a forecast of hailstorms and thunderstorms at some places in the east and west Sikkim districts on Saturday. They said hailstorms and thunderstorms would rock east and north Sikkim districts on January 27.
