Amidst ongoing tensions in Manipur stemming from an ethnic conflict that began last year, this incident adds to the region’s instability.

Since May 3 last year, Manipur has been embroiled in violence following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community.

The conflict has resulted in over 180 fatalities, highlighting the deep-seated tensions between the Meiteis, who comprise the majority of Manipur’s population, and the tribal communities such as the Nagas and Kukis, primarily residing in the hill districts.
