Imphal, Feb 24: Amidst the already tense atmosphere in Manipur, a fresh wave of violence unfolded as unidentified individuals set fire to the United Committee Manipur (UCM) office in Lamphel, Imphal West district, in the early hours of Saturday, February 24.

The incident occurred around 12:40 am, adding to the heightened tension following a blast outside the DM College in Thangmeiband, Imphal West, on Friday, February 23.

Notably, the blast site is near the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) office.

Tragically, the blast claimed the life of a 24-year-old individual named Oinam Kenegy, with two others sustaining injuries, one of whom is reportedly in critical condition.

Both injured individuals have been hospitalized for treatment, while the deceased’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Although official confirmation regarding the casualties is pending, authorities are yet to identify the perpetrators of the blast.

Police presence has been intensified in the area as investigations continue, with the type of explosive used in the blast still undetermined.

The incident adds to the existing turmoil in Manipur, where ethnic tensions have been escalating since May of the previous year.

The region has witnessed more than its share of unrest, with over 180 casualties reported during the violence that erupted following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

As the situation remains volatile, authorities are working to restore peace and stability in the region, while residents remain on edge amidst the ongoing conflict.
