Guwahati, Sept 23: Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has taken legal action by filing a defamation suit against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

The defamation case was filed in the Court of Civil Judge (Senior Division) of Kamrup Metropolitan on a Friday, with a scheduled hearing date of September 26.

Senior advocate Devajit Saikia, representing Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, stated that the lawsuit seeks Rs 10 crore in damages. The defamation claim is related to various tweets made by Gaurav Gogoi, which Riniki Bhuyan Sarma alleges have tarnished her reputation.

Saikia clarified that his client never submitted any application to obtain a subsidy, contrary to the claims made in the tweets. He emphasized that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma’s firm had initiated no subsidy application process. Instead, her firm received a show cause notice on May 26, followed by an email from the Ministry of Food Processing.

The defamation case is a legal response to the alleged false statements and reputational damage from Gaurav Gogoi’s tweets. It seeks both justice and financial compensation for the harm caused by these tweets.
