Delhi, Jan 16: As winter tightens its grip on the Indian capital, Delhi is once again veiled in thick fog, causing significant transportation disruptions. The adverse weather conditions on January 16 led to approximately 30 flights departing from Delhi Airport being delayed, with an additional 17 departing flights canceled.

While flights faced challenges due to reduced visibility, railway services were also severely affected.

A total of 30 trains destined for Delhi from various parts of the country experienced delays, varying in duration, with some trains running several hours behind schedule.

In response to escalating complaints about flight delays and cancellations, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) took decisive action by releasing new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on Monday.

According to the guidelines, airlines are authorized to proactively cancel flights well in advance if they are anticipated to be delayed beyond 3 hours.

This strategic move aims to address the growing dissatisfaction among air travelers who have been inconvenienced by sudden cancellations and prolonged delays.

The DGCA, in an official release, underscored the importance of safeguarding passengers’ interests, particularly in cases of denied boardings, flight cancellations, and unexpected delays without prior notice.

The impact of the dense fog on transportation highlights the need for proactive measures and improved communication between authorities and passengers.

As winter conditions persist, travelers and transportation services must remain vigilant and adaptable to navigate through potential disruptions.

The recent SOPs introduced by the DGCA signify a commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience and minimizing the inconvenience caused by unpredictable weather events in the region.
