New Delhi, Jan 07: Due to prevailing cold weather conditions, schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next five days until January 12 for students from nursery to Class 5, announced Education Minister Atishi on Sunday.

In a social media post, Atishi stated, “Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next five days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from nursery to Class 5.”

Initially on January 1, schools in Delhi were closed for winter break, with classes expected to resume on January 8 (Monday).

However, on Saturday, the Delhi government issued an order extending the winter break until January 10. This decision was later retracted by the Directorate of Education, citing it was “incorrectly issued.” Officials mentioned that a decision on whether to reopen schools amid the cold weather conditions would be taken on Sunday.

Over the past few days, Delhi and its neighboring states have experienced cold to severe cold day conditions, with maximum temperatures dropping below normal due to a layer of fog blocking sunlight.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) daily forecast indicated, “Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to continue in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan during the next two days and significant decrease thereafter.”

On Saturday, the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal, according to the IMD. The minimum temperature on Sunday morning was recorded at 8.2 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal.

The weather forecast predicts shallow fog, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to settle at 16 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration has declared holidays for students up to Class 8 in all schools in Noida and Greater Noida until January 14.
