New Delhi, March 16: The Election Commission will announce the dates for the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday at 3 pm, alongside the Assembly polls in several states.

With the current Lok Sabha term concluding on June 16th, the commission is tasked with ensuring the constitution of a new House before this deadline.

As soon as the dates are revealed, the Model Code of Conduct will be implemented, dictating guidelines for political parties during the electoral process.

Approximately 97 crore eligible voters across the nation will cast their votes at over 12 lakh polling stations. Preparations for the elections have been extensively reviewed by the election commission, with visits to all states completed.

Amidst this anticipation, major political parties have begun strategizing, with the BJP aiming to secure 400 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and 370 for itself.

Conversely, the Opposition, rallying under the banner of the INDIA bloc in various states, perceives this as a crucial battle.

While candidates for the Lok Sabha polls have been partly announced by major parties, seat discussions are ongoing in several states.

In the previous 2019 polls, the BJP clinched 303 seats, while the Congress secured 52. Despite its victory, the Congress fell short of claiming the Leader of the Opposition position in the Lok Sabha.

The 2019 elections, announced on March 10th, were conducted in seven phases.

Additionally, states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha are anticipated to conduct their assembly elections concurrently with the national polls, given their term expiration dates in June.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated earlier this week that the poll body would decide on Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir following a review of the security situation.
