Kolkata, April 07: Increasing the passenger handling capacity, Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport’s T2 terminal is undergoing a Rs 130-crore expansion, to facilitate smoother travel experiences for its flyers.
Plans to increase floor space in both the domestic and international wings, Sections of the terminal are currently under construction.
The expansion will add 5,600 sq m and increase the annual passenger handling capacity from 2.6 crore to 2.8 crore.
According to an airport official, they have cordoned off a section of the security hold area between boarding gates 8 and 19 to carry out civil work for the terminal’s expansion.
The airport‘s capacity expansion aligns with plans to increase flight handling capabilities from 35 to 45 flights per hour.

Civil work for constructing a new taxiway and three new rapid exit taxiways has already been completed, and also parking bays have been set up.
The expansion plan will be carried out in 2 phases.
Airport officials said as per the first phase of the expansion plan, the old domestic terminal will be demolished and a 7000 sq. phase 1 expansion plan has been sanctioned by AAI.
This would immediately increase the passenger capacity by a few million.
A master plan has been made for the construction of a third terminal that will increase the airport’s passenger capacity to 45 million.
The construction of a new terminal with a capacity of 1.1 crore a year, followed by another terminal with a capacity of 2.2 crore passengers per year. The overall capacity will reach 6.1 crore passengers per annum.
