Guwahati, May 09: Female electors, spanning different age groups, surpassed male voters in participation during the three-phase Lok Sabha elections in Assam, with 1,00,04348 women casting their votes compared to 99,83851 men across the 14 parliamentary seats.

The overall voter turnout across the three phases stood at 81.56 percent, with a total of 1,99,88,275 general electors exercising their franchise out of the 2,45,06236 eligible general voters.

In the final phase, which encompassed four constituencies, the voting percentage surged to 85.45 percent, with the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency recording the highest turnout at 92.08 percent.

Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Guwahati followed suit with polling percentages of 85.24 percent, 83.55 percent, and 78.39 percent, respectively, despite challenging weather conditions.

The elector gender ratio during the third phase polls was encouraging at 995, indicating a higher number of women in the electoral rolls compared to the population.

Dhubri, with 26,60,827 electors, registered the highest voting percentage among all 14 constituencies, despite its substantial electorate.

In the first phase, Jorhat secured the highest polling percentage at 79.89 percent, followed by Kaziranga, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, and Lakhimpur. Similarly, in the second phase, Nagaon recorded the highest turnout at 84.97 percent, trailed by Darrang-Udalguri, Karimganj, Silchar, and Diphu.

Extensive measures were implemented by the state election department to ensure smooth polling operations, including collaboration with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and BSF in riverine areas.

EVM-carrying vehicles were fitted with GPS for tracking, with over 6,000 vehicles equipped during the third phase alone. An adequate supply of EVMs was ensured, especially in remote regions.

Assam’s voter turnout exceeded the national average, reflecting satisfactory participation levels in the electoral process.
