Guwahati, July 02: The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Friday as 14 more deaths, including six children, were reported in the past 24 hours and over 29.70 lakh people in 30 districts were affected by the deluge. With this, the toll from this year’s floods and landslides has gone up to 173.

Six people lost their lives in Cachar, followed by three in Nagaon and two in Barpeta, while Karimganj, Kokrajhar, and Lakhimpur districts recorded one death each.

Over 29.70 lakh people are affected at present in Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.

On the other hand, a total of 2,450 villages are under water and more than 63,314 hectares of crop areas are inundated. The worst affected is Cachar, where over 14.04 lakh people have been affected by the deluge, followed by Nagaon with more than 4.32 lakh people still suffering due to the crisis brought to their lives by the devastating floods.

Authorities are running 894 relief camps and distribution centres in 23 districts, where as many as 3,03,484 people are currently taking shelter. Due to the impact of the flood waters, many houses, roads, embankments, and bridges have been damaged across the affected districts of the state.

The rivers Brahmaputra, Kopili, Disang, and Burhiding are currently flowing above the danger mark in six districts.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-ravaged Silchar town in the Cachar district. During his visit to the district headquarter town, CM Sarma visited a relief and medical camp.

The Chief Minister directed the concerned officials to ensure the inmates have access to proper sanitation, drinking water, and nutritious food while they stay in the camp.

CM Sarma also distributed ex-gratia relief to the next of kin of 10 deceased who lost their lives in the recent floods. He also informed that the process of granting relief to family members of the rest of the deceased has begun and will soon be disbursed.

The Chief Minister later chaired a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office and directed the officials of the district administration and other departments to leave no stone unturned to ensure normalcy in the district at the earliest.

CM Sarma also visited the flood-affected areas of Karimganj district and asked the district administration to reach out to people and expeditiously conduct a survey to assess the damage caused by the floods.

On the other hand, the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), on Friday visited the flood-affected areas in Hailakandi, Karimganj, Morigaon and Kamrup districts as a part of their scheduled field visit to Assam to assess the damages caused by the recent floods in the state.

The team later discussed the situation with the respective district administrations and assured of quick response to restore the damages.
