Rath Yatra is one of the famous Hindu festivals celebrated across the world. The day is associated with Lord Jagannath, observed at Shri Kshetra Puri Dham in the state of Odisha, India.

The day has its history depicted from the descriptions in Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, and Kapila Samhita. It is honored every year with great pomp and joy.It falls on Shukla Paksha Dwtitiya tithi in the month of Aashadha. This year it falls on July 01, 2022.

The festival starts with Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to Gundicha Temple via Mausi Maa temple located in Saradha Bali, Puri.

According to mythological beliefs, on this day, Goddess Subhadra, the younger sister of Lord Jagannath, expressed her desire to roam around the city and that’s how the procession began.

The procession begins from Gundicha temple via three chariots, — one for Lord Jagannath, another for brother Lord Balabhadra and the third one for sister Goddess Subhadra, who travel their respective chariots to Gundicha temple.

Then the chariots stop at Mausi Maa temple where they are provided with their favorite food. The three chariots rest for 7 days and later return to Jagannath temple.

The chariots are decorated with different styles which have been followed for centuries. Followers at a larger number across the world drag the chariots, which makes it a unique festival.

The huge procession includes the playing of devotional songs and bhajans with the dragging of the chariot thread by the devotees. The Gundicha temple is cleaned before the chariots reach there.

The name of the chariots are — Nandighosha for Lord Jagannath, which has 16 wheels, Darpadalana for Goddess Subhadra with 12 wheels, and Taladhwaja, called for Goddess Subhadra with 14 wheels.

The Goddess Subhadra’s chariot stays in the middle of the rest of the two chariots. Arjun becomes the chariot of Darpadalan.
