Ranchi, Feb 02: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has been remanded to five-day custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a land fraud case. The Supreme Court declined to hear a petition challenging his arrest, directing him to approach the Jharkhand High Court.

Hemant Soren, a 48-year-old leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was arrested after over seven hours of questioning by the ED regarding the land fraud case. His arrest followed his resignation as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

Earlier on the same day, the Supreme Court special bench, consisting of Justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh, and Bela M Trivedi, rejected his plea to cancel summonses issued by the probe agency and declared the arrest as illegal.

Before his arrest, Hemant Soren had nominated JMM leader Champai Soren, who subsequently took the oath as the new Chief Minister of Jharkhand.

These developments unfolded months ahead of the Lok Sabha election and the state assembly polls, both scheduled later in the year.

The arrest of the former Chief Minister has heightened political tensions in Jharkhand, with legal battles expected to unfold in the coming days.

Champai Soren, who assumed the role of Chief Minister, faces the challenge of proving his majority in the state assembly, adding complexity to the political landscape in Jharkhand.

The events leading to and following Hemant Soren’s arrest have significant implications for the JMM and its political future in the state.
