Mumbai, Feb 23: Manohar Joshi, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a prominent figure in the Shiv Sena, passed away today at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital.

Joshi had been admitted to Hinduja Hospital on February 21 after suffering a cardiac arrest and was under intensive care. He breathed his last at 3:02 am.

The funeral procession for Manohar Joshi is scheduled to commence after 2 pm, and he will be cremated at the Dadar crematorium with state honors.

Having served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 in a coalition government with the BJP, Joshi also held the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004.

His political career began in 1967 after transitioning from a career in teaching.

Although he had stepped back from active politics in recent years, Joshi remained a respected and influential figure within the Shiv Sena.

He had a long-standing association with Balasaheb Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena, and played a pivotal role in the party’s growth and development.

Joshi’s political journey commenced with his successful election as a councillor in the Maharashtra Legislative Council representing the Shiv Sena.

He later served as the Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977, showcasing his leadership abilities and commitment to public service.
