Kohima, Nov 10: PB Acharya, the former governor of Nagaland, passed away, leaving a legacy of extensive service to the nation. Appointed as the Governor of Nagaland on July 14, 2014, after the resignation of Tripura Governor Vakkom Purushothaman was accepted by President Pranab Mukherjee, Acharya concluded his term in July 2019.

His illustrious career included serving as the governor of Tripura and Assam, and he also assumed responsibilities as the governor of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

Born in Udupi district, Karnataka, Acharya had a diverse political background, having held positions in the BJP, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and BJP. Notably, he was the second person from coastal Karnataka and the first from the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community to be appointed to the Governor’s post, following Margaret Alva.

Acharya’s political journey also saw him as the national secretary of the BJP during the tenure when Narendra Modi served as the national general secretary of the party between 1995 and 2001. His early education was completed at Christian High School, Udupi, and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi.

Subsequently, he worked in Mumbai and was associated with ABVP, contributing as a member of Mumbai University’s senate. Additionally, Acharya obtained an LL.B degree from Mumbai University.

His remarkable contributions extended beyond politics, as he played a pivotal role in planning the Gyanodaya Express College on Wheels, an initiative to bring education to North East India, affiliated with the University of Delhi. PB Acharya’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and a significant impact on Indian politics and education.
