Imphal, May 23: Fresh tension has erupted in Manipur, as houses were torched by a mob, adding to the recent ethnic clashes that had shaken the state. The incident took place in the state capital, Imphal, causing a stir among the local population.

The trouble began when two individuals, one allegedly armed with a single-barrel gun, started threatening roadside vendors, mostly women, in the New Checkon area, demanding that they close their shops. The intimidating behavior of these individuals infuriated the people, leading to the escalation of the situation. News of the incident quickly spread, attracting a mob that proceeded to set fire to some abandoned houses in the vicinity, according to official sources.

To restore order, the Army and paramilitary personnel were deployed, effectively bringing the situation under control. The police swiftly apprehended the two accused individuals, who reside in a nearby area, as well as a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) who is alleged to have instigated them.

Although an indefinite curfew is already in effect in certain districts, the government has now reduced the relaxation period of the curfew in areas of Imphal by three hours in response to Monday’s incident.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured the public that the state government is committed to restoring normalcy and urged cooperation from the citizens. He further stated that the police are currently questioning the accused individuals.

The Chief Minister emphasized that security forces, including the Army, paramilitary, and state police, have been deployed in most areas to ensure the safety of the residents. He encouraged people to contact the police if they have any concerns and assured them that the government would take appropriate legal action against the culprits.

Meanwhile, Conrad K Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), expressed his party’s commitment to peace in the region. He stated that the NPP had adopted a resolution advocating for a peaceful resolution to conflicts and maintaining harmony among communities.

As the situation in Manipur remains tense, efforts by the state government, security forces, and community leaders are crucial to restoring calm and preventing further incidents of violence. It is hoped that through dialogue and concerted efforts, lasting peace can be achieved, allowing the people of Manipur to live in harmony and security.
