New Delhi, March 02: Gautam Gambhir, ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024 season, has appealed to BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda to relieve him of his political responsibilities as he embarks on his role as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Expressing his request via Twitter, Gambhir sought the BJP president’s permission to step down from his political duties to concentrate on his cricketing commitments.

He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the opportunity to serve the people.

In his tweet, Gambhir stated, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodiji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for allowing me to serve the people. Jai Hind!”

Gambhir’s decision coincides with his imminent return to KKR as their mentor. The former Indian opener will collaborate closely with head coach Chandrakant Pandit.

During his tenure as captain from 2011 to 2017, Gambhir led KKR to IPL victories in 2012 and 2014. His reappointment as KKR’s mentor was officially announced on November 21, 2023.

According to KKR’s statement, “Gautam Gambhir will return to KKR as ‘Mentor’ and join hands with head coach Chandrakant Pandit.”

Previously, Gambhir served as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Under his guidance, LSG reached the playoffs in both seasons, contributing significantly to their success.

KKR is scheduled to commence their IPL campaign on March 23 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kolkata. As two-time champions, they are slated to play three matches in the initial phase of the tournament.
