Guwahati, Jan 07: German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Philipp Ackermann, shared his enchanting experience in Assam, describing it as one of the most scenic and captivating regions he visited in 2023.

Ackermann highlighted his boat journey on the Brahmaputra, emphasizing the river’s sheer size and untamed character. He expressed the challenges faced by boatmen due to the changing course of the river, creating a sense of relaxation and appreciation for the serene surroundings. A memorable dinner on a sandbank during sunset elevated the river trip.

Kaziranga National Park, renowned for one-horned rhinos, left a lasting impression on the ambassador. He marveled at the Indian rhinoceros, noting its impressive appearance and likening it to a knight’s armor.

Ackermann appreciated the accuracy of a 1515 woodcut by German artist Albrecht Dürer, who depicted the Indian rhino based on a traveler’s description.

The ambassador was captivated by elephants in Kaziranga, recounting an encounter with a herd crossing their path. He shared the excitement of watching elephants in their natural habitat, including two very young calves, calling it a fabulous view.

While strolling through tea plantations, Ackermann encountered hoolock gibbons, a rare mammal with long arms and white eyebrows. He noted that Assam tea comes from a different plant variety indigenous to India, distinct from Darjeeling and other regions.

Delving into Assam’s rich history, Ackermann discussed the Ahom kingdom, battles against Bengali sultanates and the Mughals, and the diverse layers of Assam’s historical development.

He explored beautiful Hindu temples, relished fabulous Assamese food, and celebrated Assam as a confluence of peoples, languages, religions, traditions, and distinct characteristics.

The ambassador concluded by expressing his love for Assam and strongly recommending it as a unique and wonderful travel destination full of surprises.
