Srinagar, Feb 20: Gulmarg, renowned for its winter charm, is gearing up to host the 4th edition of Khelo India, commencing on February 21.

With participation from approximately a thousand athletes, officials, and support staff, the event promises a showcase of various winter sporting disciplines such as Snowboarding, Alpine Ski, Nordic Ski, and Snow Mountaineering.

Twenty states and Union Territories are set to compete in Alpine Ski, Nordic Ski, and Snowboarding, while ten states will vie for top honors in Ski Mountaineering.

Organized by the Department of Youth Services & Sports and the J&K Sports Council in collaboration with the Tourism Department, Gulmarg Development Authority, and other stakeholders, the event will commence with the unveiling of the mascot.

The anthem and custom apparel for this edition of the Khelo India Winter Games will mirror those of the Khelo India Games held elsewhere in the country.

The Snow Leopard serves as the emblem for the Khelo India Winter Games, chosen by the J&K Sports Council to address high-altitude development challenges, and environmental fragility, and emphasize conservation efforts to safeguard the natural habitat of this majestic big cat.

Preparations are in full swing, with logistical arrangements including accommodation and transportation meticulously planned for athletes and officials. Secretary of Youth Services & Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, along with Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull, have been actively supervising the finalization of arrangements.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, during his visit to Kashmir, extended his best wishes to the J&K Sports Council for organizing the event, encouraging participants to savor the experience and create lasting memories.

The opening and closing ceremonies promise captivating cultural performances by local artists, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. A special cultural evening on February 20 will bring together athletes, officials, tourists, and locals for a delightful cultural extravaganza.

J&K has successfully hosted all previous editions of Khelo India, attracting a growing number of participants from across the nation to the snow-covered landscapes of Gulmarg. This annual event has not only boosted winter tourism in J&K but has also played a pivotal role in promoting local culture and cuisine.
